An online booking error has resulted in South Australians of any age with any occupation being allowed to get the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine even though they weren't eligible under state health rules.
Multiple young people were able to book in and receive their injection at the Highgate Park vaccination clinic in Adelaide's south today despite the location being one of three set up in South Australia specifically for aged care and disability staff only.
Under current SA Health regulations, the Pfizer vaccine is only available to people in priority groups, such as health care workers and is only available to those under 40 if they live in a regional area where access to vaccines is more difficult.
But due to today's glitch with the Health Engine booking link, a link was shared widely across social media with many young South Australians jumping at the opportunity to get the Pfizer jab.
SA Department of Human Services have since realised the error and say the rules have not changed. and the clinic's vaccines are still reserved for aged care and disability workers, but any bookings already made will still be honoured.
"Highgate Park was established as a dedicated vaccine clinic to ensure those who work in the disability and aged care sector can access the COVID-19 vaccination," a statement read.
"For a few hours today, an error allowed anyone over the age of 18 to make a booking – This has now been rectified."
They said all bookings made this week would be honoured, including "those vaccinated today and requiring a second dose".
They clarified that anyone who now attends the clinic for a vaccination will be required to provide evidence they work in the aged care or disability sector, such as a work ID, payslip or letter from their employer.
But 9News understands since the clinic opened a week ago, there has been a low turnout from eligible workers attending the location for a Pfizer vaccination.
"We encourage anyone working in disability and aged care sectors to be vaccinated immediately through our dedicated clinic at Highgate or another service," they said.
