Warning over new MyGov scam telling people they are owed money

A new scam that tries to replicate a message from the government is telling recipients they are eligible for money due to the pandemic.

The email, claiming to be from MyGov, says the person who has been sent the fraudulent email can access the money after entering their details at a "safe link".

In an example, one of these emails reads: "Dear MyGov user. This is a notification email only. Please do not reply to this email as this mailbox is not monitored."

This scam email claiming to be from MyGov tells people they are owed money from the government due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The message then says the person is eligible for a $77 payment from the government due to COVID-19.

The email asks the recipient to verify their details in order to access the money.

However, ScamWatch has warned anyone who gets an email like this to ignore it – and never click on links like this.

"If you receive an email like this, you can report it to myGov and Scamwatch," ScamWatch said.

A few giveaways that the message is a scam include a strange email address not linked to MyGov, and some typos in the copy.
