Police investigating after man shot and killed in NSW Hunter Region

A homicide investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed in a ute in the NSW Hunter Region.

Emergency services were called to Hideaway Drive, Salt Ash, at Port Stephens just before 1.45pm today after reports a vehicle had hit a tree.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrived with NSW Ambulance paramedics to find the male driver of the Ford Ranger utility with a gunshot wound.

A crime scene has been established in Hideaway Drive, Salt Ash after a driver was found with a gunshot wound.

The driver could not be revived and died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene has been established at Salt Ash and Masonite Road, Heatherbrae, after a second vehicle was found burnt out. Both will be examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives have established Strike Force Breve to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death, which is being treated as suspicious.
