A group of conservative Republican members of Congress have confirmed rumours they want Mr Trump chosen as the Speaker of the House.

Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, one of the most prominent representatives, was asked about it at a press conference.

Republicans in Congress are pushing for Donald Trump to be chosen as Speaker of the House.

"Do you want ex-President Trump to be speaker?" a reporter asked.

"I would," Mr Gaetz replied.

"Have you talked to him about it?" the reporter asked.

"I have," he replied.

When asked for further details, Mr Gaetz replied with a grin that he keeps his conversations with Mr Trump private.

Marjorie Taylor-Greene and Matt Gaetz are prominent members of the conservative Freedom Caucus.

Fellow Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene added she "would love" for Mr Trump to be Speaker.

The Speaker of the House leads the lower chamber of Congress, a position that wields extraordinary clout.

As Speaker, Mr Trump would have the capacity to bring President Joe Biden's agenda to a standstill.

He would also have the capacity to force an impeachment trial for Mr Biden, provided he has the support of the majority of the House.

Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz is one of the most high-profile Trump acolytes.

While every Speaker in US history has been a member of the House of Representatives, there is no constitutional requirement for that to be the case.

The Speaker is chosen by a vote of the House of Representatives.

Currently, the Speaker is Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, but Republicans are bullish they will retake the House in the 2022 midterm elections.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Donald Trump speak to each other in a meeting at the White House.

"We are going to take power after this next election," Mr Gaetz said.

"It's going to be the days of Jim Jordan, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Dr Gosar, and myself."

The names he listed are among the representatives that Democrats in Washington loathe the most.

The group are part of a deeply conservative group in Congress who label themselves the "Freedom caucus".

Though they are the most prominent Republicans in Washington, they have irritated others in their party.

Republican Dan Crenshaw has described the Freedom Caucus as "grifters" and "performance artists".

On the weekend Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw, seen as a rising star in the conservative movement, called the Freedom caucus "grifters" and "performance artists".

"They're the ones you think are more conservative because they know how to say slogans real well," Mr Crenshaw said.

"They know how to recite the lines that they know our voters want to hear."
